About Saint-Malo

Walking through the cobbled streets of Saint-Malo’s old town feels like you have stepped back in time.

A very popular tourist destination and also busy port and well worth a visit as it offers the visitor an authentic glimpse into the seafaring past of Brittany. But be warned ...... There be pirates !! as Saint-Malo is best probably known as being a stomping ground for privateers (these are Pirates approved by Royalty). You can see more in the St Servan district of the city.

St Malo was founded by the Welsh monk St Maclou, who built a church on the site of the Roman city of Alet . The Cathedral, in the centre of the old town, and is built in Romanesque and Gothic styles with beautiful stained-glass windows depicting the history of St Malo.

Nearby is La Demeure de Corsaire, an 18th-century privateer’s house and museum and worth a visit if you have time.
